International attention on violence against women often focuses on organized armed groups and the use of rape as a weapon of war. However, in countries recovering from conflict, husbands, rather than armed men, often pose the greatest risk to women’s safety and well-being. According to a new International Rescue Committee report, over 60 percent of women seeking assistance after suffering violence and abuse in post-conflict Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Cote d’Ivoire are victims of intimate partner violence.

This meeting will highlight key research findings from the report and feature a presentation from Deputy Minister Annette Kiawu of the Liberian Ministry of Gender on efforts to strengthen legislation and policies to protect women from domestic violence.
