General research studies refer to data collected through systemized methods to improve the understanding of a particular topic within a wider community, within a country, or internationally. Research can include activities not explicitly linked to measuring programme performance and impact evaluations. Activities can include implementing population-based surveys, collecting qualitative data or analyzing service-based data such as health records that can give information on reporting trends (though does not give prevalence figures). For example, a study looking at the prevalence, types, severity, frequency, risk factors etc. of VAWG in a refugee/IDP camp setting, a study examining the consequences of VAWG on survivors, and a study reviewing the correlation between experiences of violence and poor health outcomes would all be considered general research.
